Colonial Writing and The Seventh Generation

Noah is studying about Colonial America. We took the feather that a friend sent him in the mail. (thanks friend!) and made a quill pen. We used water down black acrylic paint for the ink. Noah thought it was really cool to write like this but said it's much harder than he thought.

We also read more about the Ojibwa Indians. The Ojibwa thought of themselves as part of the circle. They did not see themselves separate from the Earth. They always used natural things with the seventh generation in mind. It was an awesome moment when Noah realized that his ancestors seven generations ago was thinking of him; how they lived on the earth and the way they used nature would have an impact on his life on earth. Noah said he's going to always keep that in mind and think about his seventh generation from now.

Yay. Exactly. If only everyone thought that way, we would all be in a much better place.

Looks interesting!

What a profound moment for him! And for you to see him in that moment. We have some great feathers for quills. Sounds like fun!

Oh, that is so cool, Anet. I imagine it was a really neat moment between the two of you. I agree, thinking seven generations ahead is a good way to go through life.

Hey Anet! I am loving seeing Noah write as if he was in colonial times!!!

He really could have been a pioneer... maybe even a translator for the Ojibwa... Good work Noah!!! Proud of you!!!

HI Denise, Isn't that the truth! The more we learn about the Indians the more I wish we could live like them again!

Hey Lisa, The pen was super easy to make; soak the tip in hot water for a few minutes, cut it on an angle and then make a small slit on one side of the stem part(I don't know what you really call that part, lol) thinned downed paint works great for ink.

Hi Tara, it was one of those great homeschool moments! That is what it's really about. It really made us both stop and think!

Thanks Gwen, You made Noah smile with your comment. You made his day :) We thought of you as we made the pen!
